Using Exchange with Pop3 whether you like it or not

Although Ireland is getting better with Broadband becoming more available all the time, a suprising number of customers out there with fast connections are still using the POP3 connector with SBS great article by the Offical SBS Blog team here http://tinyurl.com/rf9cc

Anyway my point, I arrived on site in a small Village in Ireland to help an IT Partner who wanted to have SBS handle some of the email for a particular domain let's say allireland.ie however there were 3 or 4 email accounts a b c@allireland.ie which were used for the other branch located 15 miles away and were not to be handled by SBS as they needed to be popped down by the PC's in the other branch.

So how do we do it - please bear in mind this solution is only suitable for a small number of users 15 or less.
As always make sure you note each setting before you change it just in case you need to revert back to your previous settings !!!

    1) Using Exchange System Manager open the Receipient Policy Tab and in our case @allireland.ie would be set as the default policy, however we are going to set the internal domain name as the default in our case @allireland.local

Why do this because we want to tell Exchange it's no longer responsible for all email for the domain key to providing the above solution and you cannot do this on the default receipient policy.

However doing the above causes us a problem as now all the from addresses are .local instead of .ie so

    2) Step 2 is to open Active Directory Users and Computers from Administration Tools and edit each user's Email Address tab selecting the correct .ie alias as their default SMTP address and ticking off the apply policy button.
