    One of those days

Most people who know me probably think I'm very upbeat maybe even too upbeat sometimes however every so often I get one of those days  wher it feels like the glass is half empty, when almost everything that can go wrong invariably does !

    So what happened  ?

    1. Spent a half an hour trying to connect to a customer's wifi network kinda crucial if your training / demonstration depends on internet connectivity.

    2. No bother will use my trusty 3G Data card, funny though when I most need it it never seems to give me 3G it would only give me 57Kbs and let's be honest you are not going to be able to give Remote Web Workplace (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/833983)  it's justice over such a slow link, especially if you want to show how easy it makes it for a customer to access their office pc from home or on the move.

    3. Sharepoint is a great tool for sharing documents and providing version control but don't try and demonstrate it if you haven't checked if the customer's firewall will allow port 444 outboud dohhhhh!

    3. Don't try and demonstrate Windows Mobile 5 and it's great Push email / always synced capability if you wiped the phone the previous evening. Great security feature if the Windows Mobile cell phone is lost you can use a free  Small Business Server Add In  called Activesync Mobile Administration to remotely wipe any WM5 Mobile device with the latest update (Messaging Security Feature Pack installed)

    4. Always / Always bring a cat 5 patch cable with you, I know network cables are going out of fashion but this time it saved my bacon and allowed me to carry out my demo.

    5. A great piece of advice I've got recently from a customer, which I need to apply more,

When you've sold something stop selling it ! I think that really applies to Windows Mobile 5 with MSFP and Small Business Server or even Exchange 2003 / Windows 2003 although guys it's a 5 minute or even less with SBS it's much more difficult  to setup on Exchange 2003 on top of Windows 2003.

For a good overview on what the windows mobile solution take a look at what Ronan a Microsoft Partner from Mullingar published http://www.inetcs.ie/mobile

Basically he took one of my powerpoint slide decks and shortened it and published it to the web.

If you really want to get up to seed on Windows Mobile take a look at http://www.windowsmobiletraining.com where you can find loads of online courses, including courses on different handsets and you can even become a Windows Mobile specialist.

Any comments / tips  good or bad don't be afraid to share

    Mark,

we have all been there.  Having one of those "it usually works" moments.
I usually have a backup EVERYTHING if I can help it.

One thing that you tend to forget when in front of the crowd is that people understand the situation because it has probably happened to them at some stage.

My top tip is, although probably would not have helped you here, carry a spare nic and wifi card from one of the big names like 3com or cisco. They are plug n play on xp and have gotten me out of a hole on more occassions then I care to remember!

    Regards,
